JohnBoy brings more than three decades of live-performance experience to Pure Classic Gold. Over the years, he has played drums in a wide range of bands and performance settings throughout Florida, developing the kind of timing, musical awareness, and stage instinct that can only come from spending years playing in front of real audiences.
His approach to drumming is centered on groove first. The goal is not simply to play fills or keep time, but to create a rhythmic foundation the entire band can feel. Whether a song calls for a straight classic rock backbeat, a Southern rock drive, a country groove, a blues feel, or something built for the dance floor, JohnBoy focuses on supporting the music and keeping everyone locked together.
That experience also brings an understanding of dynamics. A drummer has to know when to push the energy and when to leave space. Playing too much can bury a song just as quickly as playing too little can make it fall flat. Years of live work have helped JohnBoy develop the feel to recognize what a song needs in the moment.
As a vocalist as well as a drummer, he adds another layer to the Pure Classic Gold lineup. Singing while playing drums demands its own kind of coordination, and his vocal contribution gives the band more flexibility when building harmonies and assigning songs.
From Major Venues to Florida Events
JohnBoy’s live-performance history includes appearances at major Florida venues such as Hard Rock Casino Tampa and House of Blues Orlando, along with years of performing at fairs, festivals, bars, restaurants, clubs, private events, and other live-music settings.
Those different environments demand different approaches. A festival crowd may need immediate energy. A dance crowd needs a groove that remains steady and inviting. A restaurant or club requires awareness of the room, while a larger venue can demand a bigger physical and musical presence.
Experience across those situations has helped shape an adaptable style. The performance still has to feel like the same drummer, but the way the music is delivered has to fit the room.
That adaptability fits naturally into Pure Classic Gold, a band whose repertoire crosses several musical styles and whose audiences can range from dedicated dancers to classic-rock fans, country listeners, and people simply looking for a good night of live music.

The Engine Behind the Band
Drums create more than tempo. They shape the way a song moves and the way an audience physically responds to it. A strong backbeat can pull people toward the dance floor, while the right dynamics can make a chorus feel larger without overwhelming the rest of the band.
As the JohnBoy Pure Classic Gold drummer and vocalist, he approaches the kit as part of the entire arrangement. The bass and drums need to work together, but the drummer also has to listen to guitars, keyboards, fiddle, vocals, and the energy of the room. The goal is to create momentum without getting in the way of the song.
That becomes especially important in Pure Classic Gold because the band moves through classic rock, Southern rock, country, blues, and dance favorites. Each style requires a different feel. A drummer who treats every song the same way can flatten those differences.
JohnBoy’s experience allows him to adjust the pocket, dynamics, and attack while maintaining a consistent identity behind the kit. That flexibility helps the band move naturally between styles during a live performance.
Timing, Energy & Reading the Room
A live drummer has to do more than count measures. The drummer often becomes one of the internal communication points of a band, helping control transitions, endings, dynamics, and overall momentum.
After decades of live performance, JohnBoy has developed a strong awareness of how a room changes during a show. Sometimes the crowd is ready to move immediately. Other nights the energy builds gradually. Experienced musicians learn to recognize those differences rather than forcing every show into the same pattern.
That awareness matters in a dance-oriented band. Once people start moving, the rhythm section has to give them something solid to trust. A steady groove creates that connection between the band and the floor.
JohnBoy’s stage energy also contributes visually to the show. Drumming is physical, and that movement becomes part of the performance. The objective is always musical first, but a live band should still look and feel alive.
Groove, Timing & Live Stage Energy
As a core member of Pure Classic Gold, JohnBoy brings consistency, professionalism, and decades of practical live-performance experience to the rhythm section. His job is to help keep the band locked together, support the music, and maintain the energy from the first song to the last.
Pure Classic Gold performs familiar classic rock, Southern rock, country, blues, and dance favorites for audiences throughout Central Florida. That variety requires a drummer who can change musical gears without losing the feel of the show.
Working alongside Barry Levine on bass, the rhythm section provides the foundation underneath Larry Pearre’s guitar and vocals and Jared’s violin, fiddle, keyboards, and vocals. Each musician brings a different musical strength, but the common goal is to make the entire band sound cohesive.
For JohnBoy, more than 35 years behind the drums has never changed the basic reason for playing: the feeling of a live band connecting with an audience. When the groove locks in, the dancers move, the musicians react to one another, and the room becomes part of the performance, that is what live music is supposed to feel like.
